General liability questions, answered plainly

How much does general liability cost for a small business in California?
For most small California businesses the annual premium lands in the low four figures, driven by what the business does and its annual receipts. A consultant working from a laptop and a roofing contractor are not close to each other. Pick your business type above and enter your annual receipts to see an estimated indication of the range.
What does general liability actually cover?
It covers claims that someone outside your business was hurt or their property was damaged because of your operations, your premises, or your completed work, plus the cost of defending those claims. It does not cover injuries to your own employees, which is workers comp, and it does not cover damage to your own property, which is commercial property. Reading the exclusions is the part most owners skip and later regret.
Do I need general liability to get a contract or a lease?
Usually yes. Landlords, general contractors, cities, and larger customers commonly require a certificate of insurance naming them as an additional insured before work starts or a lease is signed. The required limits are written into the contract, so send us the contract and we will read the insurance section for you.
Is a BOP cheaper than buying general liability on its own?
Often, yes. A business owners policy bundles general liability with commercial property and some business income coverage, and for eligible businesses it usually costs less than buying the pieces separately. Eligibility depends on your business type, size, and location. It is worth pricing both ways.
